From My-Balls:
Its yet another server emulator for Ultima Online, based on the UOXC code. There's lots of other emus out there, but UOX and derivitives are the only open source ones, and UOXClassic compiled as-is on openbsd, so I decided to start with that code. I am doing this cause I feel like it, so you have no guarentees I will provide you with help or support of any kind if it doesn't work for you the way you think it should.

The goals for this emulator are as follows, in this order:
  1. Stability
  2. Security
  3. Scalabilty
  4. Speed
  5. Customizability
Notice "features" isn't in the list. It never will be, so don't ask for any random features. I don't care if emu x has it, go use emu x then. The first two goals are almost totally taken care of with correct and clean code. All code should be plain ansi C/C++, compile with no warnings, and be portable to any reasonable system. If the code is done correctly, there will be less bugs. If its done clean, then people can read and understand it, and will make fewer mistakes. If you want to help, see the code guidelines, or if you can't code, but still want to help, maybe you can do random stuff like fixing the scripts, etc.

Scalability is much more important than speed, its no good to have a fast emu if you can only support 25 users at a time. You can always buy faster hardware if you need more speed, you can't overcome scalability issues with more hardware. None of the other goals should ever be sacrificed to gain speed. Most speed improvments will come from better algorithms and smarter design, not from stupid optimizing tricks or trying to rely on the compiler to mangle the program and hope its faster.

Customizability is probably just a dream. It'll be tons of work just getting the other 4 goals met, I don't know where I'll find time to make it customizable, but we'll see. I don't plan on doing anything dumb like shoving javascript into it or anything, so don't worry. I think we can get pretty customizable just with simple scripting and triggers.

From My-Balls:
Well, a few people have linked to this site, and there's way more of you out there reading this than I expected so soon. There's still no release, but there's another developer. I decided to get serious about this and so I setup a sourceforge project. Obviously using their CVS server is a bit slower than my own, but since I am getting help from other people, its just easier to only make them get a sourceforge login.

I'll be getting a website just for the emulator up sometime in the near future, but quite frankly, coding is more important. I think with the offers I've gotten we'll be fine for programmers, but if anyone out there has experience with the UO protocol and would like to help out, just email me (suck at my-balls.com), we could use your help.
