For almost 4 years a guy in the background of all the different UO emulator projects made the dirty work and analyzed bits and bytes to find ways to outsmart the encryption included in the UO system. Sometimes it was fun, sometimes annoying ... sometimes it was tough, sometimes just plain easy. But he liked it.

There weren't many people who really understood that his work was actually more important than any nifty new feature in the emulator. On the contrary, in every corner there was talk about his troublesome tool that was needed to play. His mailbox was filled with messages about the tool everyday, and only about one in a year was actually a positive one. Well, he didn't really care, as he was a most friendly one. So he replied with some instructions to resolve the issue.

But then, all of a sudden, every bit of motivation and interest in UO and its encryption vanished. He doesn't really know why. Probably it was just time to move on to other things. There is this area of 3d character animation that is so fascinating ... and where his interest and motivation was alive and burning. Fortunately, the encryption work he has done so far is available for all, and even better, everyone can actually take it and continue the work, as it is open and free. Some very talented successors are out there too, so he came to the decision to leave this UO community forevermore.

There are evenings now, when he thinks about the first big encryption change in UO. It was a very tough challenge. He doesn't know the exact amount of work he has spent on it in those days, but it must have been around a dozen at least. He broke it finally, and the emulators could flourish again. He wonders what would have happend with the emulators if he failed there ...
